A 40-year-old woman died in Palanga after emergency medics failed to revive her. Authorities and medics are reconstructing the circumstances of the sudden medical collapse, and the cause of death will be determined formally.
Vilnius opened the 37th International Biology Olympiad today, the first time Lithuania has hosted the competition. The event runs through next week and is organised by the education ministry, LINEŠA and Vilnius University after Lithuania secured hosting rights with two silver and two bronze medals in the Philippines last year. Lawmakers are also weighing a proposal to raise fines tenfold for failing to fly the state flag on February 16, March 11 and July 6, while the current penalties usually range from 10 to 16 euros. The health ministry has also come out against a bill in the Seimas that would legalise abortion.
On the economy, Invest Lithuania says projects approved in the first half will generate about 700 million euros in value for Lithuania. Of that, 510.4 million euros will go into fixed assets and 190 million euros into wages for roughly 1,600 new workers, while five Lithuanian companies, including Vli Timber, FT Board, Vilniaus Paukštynas and Light Conversion, gained large-project status. The State Audit Office says Lithuania would reach its 35% forest-cover target only in 2047 at the current pace, citing a shrinking pipeline of suitable land, limited state land and weaker participation by private owners.
