Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy commander was killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes that also hit several other senior officials. The loss strikes at the chain of command overseeing Iranian operations in the Gulf and near key oil shipping lanes.

In Ukraine, Russian missile and drone attacks on March 29-30 killed at least three people and hit areas far from the front, including the west. Poland scrambled fighter jets as the barrage unfolded close to NATO airspace. Russia earned 7.7 billion euros from fossil fuels in the first two weeks of the Iran war as oil prices jumped and Asian buyers took more Russian crude.

Why it matters

The commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard naval force was killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes, alongside several other senior officials, Iranian state media said after attacks on military and state targets. The strikes came after weeks of escalating confrontation, with Iran and Israel already trading blows across the Gulf and near Iranian waters. Tehran said its security organs are taking on extra duties, signalling that retaliation and internal control will now be concentrated in a narrower circle.

Why it matters

Shipping through the Gulf and the energy market face direct risk if Iran responds with attacks on tankers or maritime infrastructure. Regional states and U.S. forces will have to prepare for a tighter naval security posture.
